Safety A Priority at Channing School

Dear Parents, Students, and Community Members

School safety has become everyone’s biggest concern about schools and rightly so as we should all be concerned about our young people being safe.  We wanted to let you know that Channing ISD is greatly concerned about this issue as well and we are constantly looking at ways to make our school safe.

We feel that our school is pretty safe, but every time we have a school shooting, the district looks at the procedures that we have in place and this time has been no different.  We have reviewed these procedures with the entire staff and have made a few changes that we think will help us to improve the safety for your child.

The board and administration have had several discussions about this issue and what changes the district might look at putting in place.  We have had a security company and law enforcement
evaluate the building and help us to reevaluate our procedures.  We are currently looking at implementing some additional changes from these reports that we believe will make the school even safer.

Here are some ways that you can help us with the safety issues at our school.

Please check in at the office when arriving on the school campus for any reason.
We need to know who is on campus and why.  There are numerous reasons for this, but the main reason is that you would not want other people to have access to your child without administration’s or your approval.

Visit with your child about strangers.
One of the greatest parts of a small school is knowing everyone, but sometimes kids take this for granted and don’t worry about this.  The staff keeps a close eye out for anyone on campus that we do not know, but bad things can happen quickly.

Visit with your child about our drills.
We will be conducting a lock down drill soon and we worry what impact that could have on our younger students.  Let them know that they are safe at school and that we are just taking precautions.  You might compare it to buckling a seatbelt in a car in case there is an accident, but no one ever plans on having an accident.

If you have concerns, questions, or suggestions, please don’t hesitate to contact Robert McLain or Forrest Hebert at 235-3432 or 235-3719.

Respectfully,
