Dual Credit Students Continue to Shine

In the Spring of 2014 Channing ISD students achieved a new high of 54 college credit hours earned that semester with students enrolled in dual credit classes.  For some schools that might not be a huge number, but then consider that everyone of these students received an A in their college class sparks a little more interest.

In the Fall of 2014 Channing ISD students topped the college credit hour total.  Our 14 students enrolled in dual credit classes got credit for 57 college hours and 95% received an A.  This, again, might not seem too impressive to a larger school, but let us look at percentages.  40% of every Sophomore, Junior, and Senior are enrolled in dual credit classes and are being very successful!

This is a great testimony to our students and teachers.  Our students are very dedicated about their studies, the efforts that they put forth, and are doing great things.  The teachers are doing a great job of having those students prepared for these classes.  These classes are not watered down versions of college classes.  These students are graded on the same standards and assignments as every other student enrolled in those classes at Frank Phillips College.  In fact, last spring then junior Callie Shipley beat out all of those college students and was recognized as Frank Phillips College's top English student of the year!  A proud accomplishment for a Channing Eagle!

The parents enjoy the program as it could cost them absolutely no money for the students to get these college classes.  All students have to do is maintain an A or B for the college class and Channing ISD reimburses the parents for these classes.  Channing ISD also pays for the books so it is possible to get in an entire year of college for free!

We have expanded the number of classes that are available to our students this year and are continuing to look at expanding to meet student's interest.  This summer our welding teacher will be undergoing some training at Frank Phillips College to be able to offer dual credit classes in welding.  These classes would leave our welding students one class away from having a certificate of employability.  We are also looking at options and possibilities of adding in some building trade credits, computer science, expanded virtual classes, and others.
