Rachel's Challenge Coming to Channing

Parents, Community Members, and Friends of Channing School,

In early October, Channing School learned about a program called Rachel’s Challenge and set up a program for our students and community on Monday, November 20th, 2017.  This is a program that helps students understand and create a culture of values, respect, positivity, character, and compassion through various programs.  This program was set up by the parents of Rachel Joy Scott who was the first victim of the Columbine shooting.  I have spoken to administrators that have this in school already and they have told me that this program is “the best program I have ever seen in schools.”

There are multiple components involved with this program, but the first stage will begin on November 20th, 2017.  There will actually be four programs that day:

  1. The elementary program will begin at 9:00 a.m. that day and will be attended by K-5th-grade students, their teachers and any adults that would like to attend.  It is a 40-minute program.
  2. The secondary program will begin at 10:30 for grades 6th-12th, teachers, and any adults that would like to attend.  This is a 60-minute program.
  3. At 1:00 p.m., secondary students may choose to attend the Friends Of Rachel (FOR) training which will be the foundation for the FOR Club.  This training is open to adults as well.  This is a 90-minute program.
  4. Finally, at 6:30 p.m., there will be a community and parent presentation.  This will last an hour.  It is recommended for 6th-grade students and above, but much of this may be a repeat of what they have already seen.  Below 6th-grade students are discouraged from attending as it may be a bit graphic for them.

I am including links to two videos that share more about this program:

There are a plethora of positive outcomes that can come from this program and we hope that you will be able to attend at least the community presentation.  All costs of this initial program have been generously met by an anonymous donor.  If you would like more information, please call me at 235-3432.

                                                                                                Sincerely,
