Channing School and School Safety

With the recent news articles, political statements, and happenings across our great nation, Channing ISD feels that we need to reassure our students, parents and community members that we are committed to the safety of our students and school personnel.  We take threats seriously and are always in contact with both the Hartley County Sheriff's Department and the Department of Public Safety when there are concerns or needs.

Proactively, at the December 2017 board meeting, Channing's Board of Trustees had already started exploring possibilities and options to help secure our buildings/grounds and increase the safety of our students and staff in addition to what was already in place.  Just a couple of steps that have happened since those discussions started taking place are upgraded security cameras that have been in place the last nine years, secured the front of the building and we are looking into the options and process of having additional security measures in place.  There is a common misconception that a decision can be made and the next day programs can be implemented.  There is an incredible amount of training, planning and safety concerns that some of these decisions bring with them and that takes some time to sort through.  We have already moved through a good portion of this process, but there is still much to do.

Again, we wanted to reiterate that we are not taking these concerns and happenings lightly and wanted to keep you apprised of what we are thinking.  If you would like to contact Robert McLain at 235-3432 or by e-mail at robert.mclain@region16.net and share your concerns or opinions, please feel free to do so as we would like to have input into your concerns.

We feel that there are already advantages that our school has that help with this problem.  First and foremost is that we are small enough that we know and have good relationships with all of our students.  This gives us a great opportunity to see and interact with students every day, know when something is bothering them and to help them through the tough spots of growing up.  Another advantage is having a community that will reach out to the school when they see or of something that we need to be aware of and we are small enough that we can react quickly.  Statistically, schools have always been and still are the safest place for students to be and together we can keep it that way.
