Students and Parents of Channing ISD:
We are investigating reports of students possessing vapes and/or vaping in school. Because of this, we would like to make you aware of what may happen if a student is caught vaping or is in possession of a vape at school, on the bus, or at a school-sponsored activity.
The 88th Texas Legislature (2023) made changes to Chapter 37 of the Texas Education Code (the student discipline chapter) that address vaping and schools.
DAEP REQUIRED: Now, any student who is caught possessing an e-cigarette must be placed in a disciplinary alternative education program, if space is available.
WHAT IF NO ROOM IN THE DAEP? If space is not available in the DAEP, the student must be placed in in-school suspension, then transferred to a DAEP should space become available during the disciplinary period.
Students will receive three days of OSS (Out of school suspension) prior to serving twenty days of DAEP. When a student is assigned to DAEP, the school will not provide transportation. It is the parent’s responsibility to drive the student to the assigned location and pick them up on time each day.
Law enforcement will be called, and the student will (at minimum) receive a ticket, though more serious consequences may be issued if the situation warrants.
For students from out of district, we may revoke their transfer.
In Texas, it is against the law for anyone under the age of 21 to be in possession of or use a vape, no matter if it contains THC, nicotine, or anything else. It is also becoming common for vapes to be reloaded with liquid methamphetamine or even fentanyl, and students may not be aware of what they are ingesting.
If a student is offered a vape, he or she needs to report it to the office immediately. There is very little we can do about something after the fact, so it is important to report this right away.
Parents, please check your students backpack and belongings if you suspect something. Vaping is serious and can cause lung disease, heart disease, cancer, and even death.
At school, we do have the right to search students and their belongings if we have reason to suspect they are in possession of a vape.
Thank you for your attention to this,
Gina Chambers, Principal
Misty Heiskell, Superintendent

Congratulations to our JH girls for their win over Adrian!

E-Sports Valentines Dance Feb. 7

Pajamas and house shoes are NOT to be worn to school unless it is an approved dress up day. We do not have any dress up days scheduled in the near future, so do not let your student wear them.
Secondary students are the ones we are seeing the issue with and if it keeps happening, parents will be called to bring additional clothes to change into. Thank you for your cooperation.

Parents,
We will NOT be dismissing school early today for snow. If you feel that you need to pick your student(s) up early, you may do so without hurting their attendance.
Thank you,

Just a reminder: Channing does have school tomorrow.
